East Marginal Way S between S Spokane and S Michigan streets is part of State Route 99 and provides critical connections to the regional railroad and highway system for businesses in the Duwamish industrial area. There are no designated bicycle facilities, no sidewalk on the west side, and only intermittent sidewalk on the east side that varies in width and quality. Most sections of the sidewalks that are present have uneven pavement and obstructions that significantly reduce the pedestrian travel way. People walking on the west side must either walk along railroad sidings that are adjacent to the street or cross the street to use walkways on the east side if they are present.

Key Elements of South Segment Corridor Click for more
  • Part of STATE ROUTE 99, designated as a HIGHWAY OF STATEWIDE SIGNIFICANCE, and the northern portion is part of the HEAVY HAUL freight network; CRITICAL CONNECTIONS to the regional railroad and highway system for businesses in the Duwamish MIC
  • Carries over 7,200 TRUCKS daily with an average daily traffic volume of 38,200 VEHICLES
  • Has NO BICYCLE FACILITY
  • Has an INTERMITTENT SIDEWALK ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE STREET that varies in width and quality. NO SIDEWALK on the west side of the street. Spacing between protected pedestrian crossings varies between 800 to 1,800 FEET
  • Served by FIVE BUS ROUTES during weekday commute periods, the corridor provides 12 TRANSIT STOPS. Total of 2,200 BOARDINGS for all routes serving East Marginal Way

At a minimum, our goal is to install a multi-use path between S Spokane St and Diagonal Ave S. This would be on the east side of the road from S Spokane St to Duwamish Ave S. At Duwamish Ave S, the path would cross to the west side of East Marginal Way and continue south to Diagonal Ave S.

Between Diagonal Ave S and S Michigan St, we have prioritized building new sidewalk where gaps exist, making improvements for people walking at crossings and/or intersections, and improving conditions adjacent to transit stops. We’ve identified what we think are some priority locations for these types of improvements, but we want to hear from you.
